EVENT #1

BIOART TALK: WE'RE ALL LIVING IN AN ESTROWORLD

For my first event, I attended the BioTalk Series: We’re all living in an Estroworld by Mary Maggic. Prior to my attendance, I was not sure what to expect, despite the fact that Maggie’s topics seemed very intriguing. Maggic is a very involved and accomplished person in the world of ‘biohacking’ and is diving deep into the world of how our bodies “queer at the molecular level” (Maggic).

I thought this was an extremely interesting application to the gender roles and norms we see today, but also a great addition to the material learned in class this week. This week we learning about the intersection between art and medical technology. For example, Professor Vesna discussed how plastic surgery and prosthetics emerged from injuries obtained in war — more specifically how plastic surgery and prosthetics are a pinnacle example of the merging between arts and the medical technological world (Vesna).

However, today’s talk took the merging of these two topics to another level. Maggic touched on so many ideas and experiments they had done and had hopes of doing. Her concept, estroworld,is “fictional corporate conglomerate of petrochemical, agricultural, and pharmaceutical industries whose products and molecular residues are simply inescapable” (EstroworldNow). They ultimately breaks down hormones, specifially estrogen, and uses her finding as a way to battle gender politics going on in our society today (Holo).

One of their many experiments, was the act of extracting the estrogen hormone from urine. They ultimately came up with a process that would allow for the breakdown of these molecules, and to leave her with only the estrogen hormones. Maggic comes from the perspective of an artist, but also a biohacker (Maggic).  Their scientific findings surrounding hormones allow them to challenge gender norms both in the medical world but also in society as a whole. They is the ultimate example of the concepts we learned this week. One experiment they mentioned that I personally found to be really interesting would be the potential extraction of lactic acid from athletes, more in particular male athletes to connect it back to the plasticity of genders. I would like to learn more about this potential athlete experiment (Maggic).

I would definitely recommend this talk to anyone interested in the topics of gender, art, and medical technology.
